Our Veterinary Team
We are incredibly proud of our dedicated team. We hire only the best and most experienced employees to join our team here at Critter Care Veterinary Clinic. Our team is filled with highly true animal lovers who are well-trained at their jobs. They will do anything possible for their patients and the owners who love them.
Learning and education are essential here at Critter Care Veterinary Clinic. We strive to have a state-of-the-art hospital with a staff trained in the latest medical advances. Our patients deserve the very best veterinary care.
Our team is full of animal lovers. They make it a goal to treat each patient like their own. They give each patient plenty of love and attention. They are prepared to discuss preventative medicine so that every pet can stay as healthy as possible. They will also do everything that they can to make a sick pet feel better as soon as possible.


Dr. Sandra Leyendecker
Veterinarian
Dr. Leyendecker was born and raised in Laredo and graduated from Nixon High School in 1976. She attended LCC for two years before attending TAMU, where she earned her bachelor’s in agricultural education in 1982 and then a masters in agricultural education in 1983. In 1994, she earned her doctorate degree in veterinary medicine at Texas A&M University in College Station. She worked for the USDA ARS (Agricultural Research Service) for ten years, developing exams to test food animals for drug residues, working with e. coli and salmonella, as well as working with bacterial drug resistance. In Dec. 2000, she moved back to Laredo and worked with Dr. John Spruiell on Clark Boulevard for four years before opening her own clinic in November 2004.
Dr. Leyendecker has said that her immense love for animals has always been the driving force behind her success. “I grew up on a farm with a lot of animals,” she says. “I almost have a zoo in my house now.”
Dr. Leyendecker has donated much of her time to various causes in the community. She has been the leading veterinarian for LAPS (Laredo Animal Protective Society) for many years. She also helps with other various reasons such as NRCS (Conserving Natural Resources for the future), Wildlife Task Force, Webb County Chairperson, Animal Issues Committee- disaster preparation, TDH (Texas Department of Health)-with local vaccination drives, youth wildlife camps, and hunts, 4-H, career days at local school, and sponsorship for local students and athletes.

Dr. Alex Brenk
Veterinarian
Dr. Alex Brenk was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. She lived in Oklahoma and Alaska but has been in Texas since high school. She received her undergraduate degrees in psychology and biology from Texas A&M University where she worked in a research lab studying addiction. She went on to attend veterinary school at Texas A&M University and graduated in 2016. Dr. Brenk begins her veterinary career at Claws & Paws Veterinary Hospital®. Dr. Brenk has completed a number of externships, internships, and special projects during her education, including Houston SPCA rotations, African Wildlife Conservation and Health Study Abroad, in South Africa, Texas A&M Enrichment Camp, and the San Antonio Zoo. Dr. Brenk joined the Critter Care Veterinary Clinic family in September 2019 and she looks forward to continuing to build long-term relationships with her clients and patients.
