Pet Ultrasound
The preparation for an ultrasound is simple, but because pets must remain motionless, light restraints and sedatives may occasionally be required. Some shaving of the chest or abdomen may be necessary, depending on the area of the body that has to be seen by the ultrasound.
Ultrasound waves are produced by an ultrasound machine. A tiny probe attached to the machine is placed delicately against your pet’s skin. The probe emits painless ultrasound waves that are reflected off of the organs and other structures before returning to a sensor inside the ultrasound machine. These reflected “echoes” are collected by the ultrasonic apparatus, which then makes use of them to produce images that may be seen on a screen. Abdominal organs such as the liver, spleen, gallbladder, and kidneys can be clearly seen in ultrasound imaging. It is helpful for determining the health of the fetus and keeping track of pregnancies in breeding animals.
